Sheet Metal Fabrication & Uses

By superadmin on December 13, 2018 in Blog

Sheet metal is an essential component for construction, being used in everything from automobiles through to flooring and roofing in large commercial structures. It is exceptionally strong and durable, and it’s easy to work with as it can be bent, stamped, stretched, cut and curled according to your requirements. In this blog post, we’ll be uncovering the process, benefits and uses for sheet metal.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Methods

Whether for DIY projects or large-scale commercial construction, metal needs to be shaped to suit the intended purpose. At Mascot Steel we can cut and supply stainless steel according to your specification.  We utilise a range of methods, such as:

Plasma Cutting – Ideal when you require a precision cut or elaborate architectural shaping, plasma cutting achieves a clean finish with minimal material waste. Elaborate geometric patterns can also be uploaded to a computer, and the plasma machine will trace the outline. Mascot Steel is equipped with a state-of-the-art Plasma/Profile cutting machine, as well as sophisticated CAD software for precision cuts. We can also provide laser cutting upon request.

Bending – We can bend sheet metal using a variety of techniques on-site. We have all the necessary tools; no job is too difficult!

Joining – Sheet metal is commonly used in large scale applications, for example flooring and roofing. Joining individual sheets can be done on-site at Mascot Steel.

Finishing – There are a range of finishes available, including matte, brushed or mirror. Sheet metal used for flooring features a chequered plate design for added grip and texture. This makes steel an exceptionally versatile material. We even offer prime painting to protect the steel against the elements and enhance corrosion resistance.

Sheet metal comes in 3 different types: Thin, plate and thick. Thin sheets have a thickness of about 3mm, plates are normally between 3-8mm thick and thick sheets can be up to 300mm. The required thickness will vary depending upon your construction goals, and we recommend that you design to a common gauge to optimise efficiency and function. A lower gauge metal will be thicker and less pliable, whilst a higher gauge will allow for some level of movement and shaping.

It is important to choose a reputable fabricator, as otherwise you may choose the wrong product for the job or experience issues such as premature corrosion. We carry an extensive range of steel sheet including zinc anneal, mild steel, galvanised steel, hot roll, cold roll, steel floor plate and sign white sheet. Our hot-dip galvanizing process provides added corrosion resistance thanks to the application of a zinc coating which protects the base metal.

Benefits of using sheet metal  in construction

The versatility of sheet metal makes it ideal for use in almost any construction project, including:

  • Automobile Panels
  • Cargo Truck Panels
  • Train Cars
  • Buildings – Roofing and Flooring
  • Home Appliances – Fridges, Freezers, Microwaves etc
  • Skip bins
  • Aircraft
  • Healthcare
  • Food/Hospitality
  • Computer Equipment
